Community, Tribes and Research: Odd Combo

Deloitte’s study focuses on better understanding the value of community. With a hybrid approach of quantitative and qualitative research they had the following pool of respondents:

  • 400+ companies – Consumer packaged goods, Software, Hospitality, Insurance and just a bunch of other segments
  • Communities ranged from <100 members to more than 1 Hotel chains million members
  • Revenues <$1 million to >$40 billion

So as you can see with this sample the mindset of the responses are more or less all over the place. Tactical to Strategic, Growth to Stagnant, Hopeful to Pragmatist. I’ll take a good all over the place sample over a hyper focused group of people like me anytime.

Sometimes it’s good just to go back to the basics

So I don’t share a whole bunch around here, in fact this is my third post but I found this set of lectures which you might want to click through.  I’m always on the look out for reasonable content to share with my clients and wouldn’t you know a client pointed me to these so here you go.  While there are some typos and hanging thoughts, it’s worth the clicking and 6-8 minutes to go through, I couldn’t imagine the 4 hours it took the presenter to click through.

So what is marketing?

What are the Core Marketing Concepts? So I’m curious why the 4 P’s are in there, but it works still.

Marketing Management – Please note, “de-marketing” is not something I’d recommend or even heard of before looking at these slides and I cannot imagine the budget required to “reduce” demand.  I’ve been in some bad segments before, but not once had I wanted less demand.

Lecture 4 – Here is where things get a little less valuable, but it’s only a 2 minute click through.

I’ll check out lecture 5, but in general this is a good baseline for those that are looking to explain some concepts, not actions or implementation models, just concepts.

Lazy Brand: Get your brand out of the living room!

Brand spend, brand awareness is so different today than even 12 months ago thanks to the interwebs and an increasingly over burdened attention span. Crowdsourcing, multi-tasking and interactive media preferences require a different approach, since as noted in Helge Tennø‘s presentation the internet is a connection machine!

Sharing is good and Landor Associates is getting it.  Maybe the menu will go more into the implementation and management part of the process, but regardless we can all benefit from this strategic view of brands and people.  Menu isn’t my word, from their website:

Our offering is a menu, not a rigid process. Different companies start at different points, depending on their business. Where does your brand need to grow?
