TechJournal South Deck Party

The [tag]Deck Party[/tag] seemed to have a job fair feel about it with numerous [tag]Earthlink[/tag] employees on retention packages mingling through the crowd. Not really, some did have jobs, but apparently not ones they liked. The were sponsors seemingly random, but there were free koozies and beer. Ok TechJournal South – you can spam me for another year!

ATLANTA—“You should do this more often,” was the comment most heard at the first [tag]TechJournal South [/tag]Deck Party in [tag]Atlanta[/tag], which drew 600 networkers to the square across from the [tag]Georgia Tech[/tag] Hotel and Conference Center. TJS teamed with ATDC and the Technology Association of Georgia to put on the event.

The event was held under a tent outdoors on a chilly but fine fall night.

“It was a great turnout for the first Atlanta Deck Party and it was great to see the Atlanta tech community come together for a night of relaxed networking,” says Scott Hedrick, TJS Advertising Director.

I met a very reasonable number of folk, but let me tell you Bo deserves the memory medal for his ability to retain a random name for 3 days. I clearly didn’t trust my memory, so I took a picture of his name tag.

It was a good evening, but not sure there was 600 people – I guess that’s why it’s First TechJournal South Atlanta Deck Party draws 600, NOT – First TechJournal South Atlanta Deck Party draws 600 Attendees. Being in marketing, I understand that they received 600 registrations, but not people at the event. I would put it in the 200-250 max with the whole night churn, had I paid more attention I would be willing to judge it down even more.

Wish my other photo’s turned out, too dark – sorry Mike, Todd and Dave. Regardless of the person count, appreciation goes out to all those I met and the folks that funded it – cheers!

Tech speak – taking it to the streets….

guykawasaki Check out these end-user photos from the southern Cal fire: http://truemors.com/?p=15364

So this [tag]Tweet[/tag] from guy made me think a little, as software folks do you take your jargon home? I’m pretty sure that when I coach my home team I use words which are more appropriately used in the [tag]workplace[/tag]:

“Kevren, I need you to action those items as discussed, your room clearly needs to be cleaned up ASAP”

“Dijouri, as you reflect on the incident at school with the spelling test; do you feel their was an opportunity for improvement? How are you efforting those items which you feel you can do better on? Going forward I think you should remember those items and drive to closure the gaps in expectations.”

“Prescott – while I certainly appreciate the flurry of activity, I need you to appreciate that results are more important than activity”

“Guys – we said we were going to the skate park — no scope creep. We can do the movies tomorrow.”

“As part of your bonus plan kids, we need to layout our 3 objectives for the week to get an incremental budget allocation to support your newly surfaced expense needs for the next week.”

“Emily — I’m currently efforting that initiative, it is my expectation I will close on taking the garbage out on or before COB tomorrow.”

“Dijouri, not sure I like the look and feel of that tinker toy creation”

I guess the upside is my kids will quickly be acclimated to corporate America, downside is their friends look at them weird when they say things like “at the end of the day, I just want to play my wii and I am willing to accept the trade offs associated with that decision.”

As for such – speak with my wife, it just doesn’t work. I’m just flat out told to “speak English”.

#50 Friends I Can’t Wait to Meet

After bumping into Guy Kawasaki’s use of #80 How Twitter Improved My Blog, this might be one of those things gifts that just keep giving in this whole crazy social media world. So I will now steal what I think is my household’s 3 use of a topic, but one that I think will be fun. To that end, I embark on friends I can’t wait to meet!

I’ve taken this multiple ways – people I know and yet I haven’t met and people I don’t know whom I would like to meet. I’m also adding people who I would like see again soon/don’t see enough of…

Chris Brogan – This guy is someone I haven’t met, but he just he just get me to use that twitter thing. I may randomly call at some point, but I doubt I will every put my cell number on the public web. So this is in the haven’t met and don’t know bucket.  I also have another 97 things to blog on because of him.

Chris Lyman – I’ve emailed on and off with this guy for almost 10 years, he sits in my address book, just waiting for the next reasonably interesting mass address book note I have. His open letter was fun to watch as well. I just don’t make it to culver city-ish that much and when I get in the region its normally San Diego basically and I don’t have like 6 extra hours.

Michael Wilson – I’ve been chatting and emailing with this guy for nearly 3 months, good news is I hope/look to meet him soon in person.  Plus Small World Labs is good stuff.   I should have gone to ACL, but too close to the due date and not worth the risk.

Ross Mayfield – I’ve only chatted with this guy a couple of times, but one of the biggest brains I’ve ever interacted with and passionate!  The guy is just crazy quick on the uptake, I will ping him the next time I’m in the bay.

Allison – So I have this random phone number in my phone that for the life of me I can’t remember who it is. I accidentally dialed it like a month ago, she called back and left a really lengthy vm – even knew both my wife and my name. I have to think we met last new years, but just weird that she left a voicemail like we went WAY back.  Just to give credit, I got the New years context from her vm. I guess i’ll see in 90 days at panic.

The people I don’t see enough of…

The Atlanta Crew – This is the whole group of folks, who while I live within 18 miles of all of them, I still don’t see them enough. (Jay, Karin, Warshaw, Scott, Alicia, Jake, Ingrid, Gianna, Jason, Doug, Katie, Naylor, David, Claire, Chicken, Stacy and Jason, et. al). I guess the “baby shower” is the next opportunity for this.

Dan, Della and David – I’ll see y’all at new years.
